Undergraduate
"RUKA is committed to enhancing the quality of primary care medicine in the nation through its clinical program for medical undergraduates enrolled at the University."
About
The University of Malaya Medical Programme (UMMP) is the 5-year undergraduate medical programme. Our department are involved in teaching students at various stages of their training.
Students also learn about the work of other members of the primary health care team, as they have practical sessions in the outpatient pharmacy, Directly Observed Short-Term Therapy (DOTS) clinic, child immunisation clinic, and spend time with the social worker, dietitian, and diabetic nurse educator.
Students are introduced to the approach of social accountability in the form of a small Community Oriented Primary Care project. They are required to identify a community health issue and to deliver an intervention to address this issue, and at the same time learn how to use community resources in the intervention.
Training Stages
- In Stage 1 (Year 1): during clinical day sessions, students are introduced to patients in a clinical setting and have the opportunity to practise history taking and general communication skills with patients.
- In Stage 2 (Year 2): clinical day teaching sessions with patients in the department are organised based on the organ system that the students are currently learning about.
- In Stage 3.3 (Year 5): students spend 8 weeks with the department on rotation. They are taught the principles of family medicine and have the opportunity to spend time in three different primary care settings: in the Primary Care Clinic setting at University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), in a government health clinic, and in a one-week attachment with a private general practitioner, and have a one-day attachment to Hospis Malaysia.
