Dr. Joe Ooi
Dr. Joe Ooi Chor Yau
Associate Professor, Department of Family Medicine, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak
"While many people pursue a PhD for noble reasons, my motivation was different. My primary reason for starting this journey was to be closer to my family. Despite this, deciding to pursue a PhD has been one of the most significant decisions of my life. Throughout the process, I gained invaluable experiences and knowledge that I might never have encountered otherwise. I was fortunate to be guided by exceptional supervisors who taught me the art of research, to network with other researchers, and to travel to places I never imagined visiting—like the United States. Though the journey was challenging, marked by the pandemic and personal burnout, I have never regretted my decision. Looking back, the journey itself has profoundly enriched my life."

"Reflecting on my postgraduate studies, I am deeply grateful for the exceptional education and support. The department's strong emphasis on research methodology provided a robust foundation for my professional growth. The faculty, who were not only experts but also dedicated mentors, guided me through every step. One of the most significant experiences was contributing to a project promoting healthy aging for Malaysians—the first of its kind. The collaborative environment encouraged critical thinking and effective teamwork across various disciplines. I am proud to be an alumnus of such a prestigious institution."

Dr. Muhammad Ashraf
Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Bin Khalid
Senior Lecturer, Department of Decision Science, Faculty of Business and Economics, Universiti Malaya
"My academic background was in Computational Mathematics and Applied Statistics, so I had little research experience before starting my PhD. Mentored by Professor Dr. Ng Chirk Jenn, I decided to dive into health sciences under a clinical department. Back then, many peers were surprised by this leap! However, the department’s unique blend of clinical and non-clinical expertise was a huge asset. This mix helped me bridge the gap between my background and PhD research. Today, I am back in my original field, but I encourage my own students to embrace interdisciplinary opportunities just as I did."

"Who would have thought an ordinary librarian would pursue a PhD in Medicine? I am grateful for the opportunity provided by my supervisors to train in Evidence-Based Medicine and Systematic Reviews. I am delighted to be part of this PCM family. The study environment is excellent, supported by an amazing network. Of course, there were struggles, but the care from everyone motivated me to finish. After graduating, I transitioned from a Senior Librarian to a Senior Lecturer. I am grateful to everyone who has been part of my humble journey."

"It feels like family in this department. This department has always pushed for people-centred care. Yes, publications and thesis are important, but it has always been about people first here. Most of the work I have been involved in was done with the passion to improve care for the community, not just for the sake of publication. From organizing health campaigns to research workshops, it has been an enriching journey. Moving forward, the skills and confidence I built continue to be valuable in my role pursuing digital health research."

Dr. Lee Yew Kong
Senior Lecturer and Head, Research Training Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya
"My PhD on shared decision making was a great foundation. Thankfully, my supervisors guided me on how to translate local research findings into a format suited for international readers. While publication pressure can be frustrating, in this department, I learned to enjoy the process. After graduation, I joined the department as a senior lecturer. Coming full circle, I was recently invited to the editorial board for the first journal I ever published in."
