The Dr Liew Su-May Research Award

The Dr Liew Su-May Research Award was established in 2023 by the Department of Primary Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, to honour the legacy of the late Professor Dr Liew Su-May—an esteemed clinician-researcher and a passionate advocate for excellence in primary care research.

Professor Liew Su-May was deeply committed to advancing research that meaningfully improves primary care practice. Central to her philosophy was the belief that patients and communities should not merely be subjects of research, but active partners in its design, conduct, and application. She consistently emphasised the importance of listening to patient voices, valuing lived experiences, and translating research findings into action that benefits the communities served. Her work exemplified research that is rigorous, relevant, and grounded in real-world primary care settings.

Professor Dr Liew Su-May

In commemoration of her contributions, the Dr Liew Su-May Research Award seeks to inspire and encourage future generations of primary care physicians to pursue research excellence in the spirit of her values and principles. The award recognises outstanding scholarly work among candidates in the Master of Family Medicine programme of Universiti Malaya, specifically for the best research project completed as part of their training. Selection of the award recipient is overseen by a Selection Committee appointed by the Faculty of Medicine. Evaluation is based on three core domains: originality of the research, its potential impact on primary care practice, and the extent to which the work reflects the calibre, values, and patient-centred principles exemplified by Dr Liew Su-May.

The recipient of the Dr Liew Su-May Research Award receives a cash prize of RM1,000 and an official certificate issued by the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. The award is conferred once per academic session. Now in its third year, the award continues to recognise and promote high-quality, patient-centred research among future family medicine specialists.

Through this annual award, the Department of Primary Care Medicine seeks to preserve Dr Liew Su-May’s legacy by promoting high-quality, patient-focused research that continues to strengthen primary care in Malaysia.
