The Department of Primary Care Medicine is both an academic and clinical division at the University of Malaya. Since its establishment in 1987, the Department has served as a training facility for future medical professionals enrolled at the University, produced pioneering research in primary care medicine and provided quality healthcare services to the masses.
The idea to create a Department of Primary Care Medicine mooted
Driven by the need for a general clinic to cater to the growing patient population in the hospital. Many of these were patients who could be more appropriately seen in a primary care setting rather than in specialised clinics. It was the right time and place for the setting up of an academic primary care department.
The department was established
A Board of Studies was appointed to study the feasibility of establishing a primary care department. The Department was finally established in February 1987.
A purpose-built three-storey primary care building was constructed
First batch of master of family medicine trainees graduated
The University of Malaya Primary Care Research Group(UMPCRG) was formed
Celebrated 30th anniversary
